I can see a bird's head and shoulders. What is it?

Here is a cropped picture: A preying mantis....... Hope he keeps all the bugs in check.

Oh wow I see him now.
I also realise that what I thought were the head and shoulders of a bird was actually just part of a leaf!

Cool. We have those on our avocado tree and around in our backyard. I saw a young/small one recently. I had only ever seen the huge ones. It was really cute!!

I saw the same as Jane. It looked like a dove to me. We have doves in our backyard. I much prefer them to preying mantis which we thankfully don't have here.

I am sure I would have nothing short of a heart attack if a four inch one jumped onto me.
At least they are the "good" kind of insect to have in your garden.

I just fed Rey a worm that was chowing down on my cherry tree.
It was just like watching a nature show.

We don't have them here. I have seen them on nature programmes. I think they are very elegant insects, although the females are renowned for eating the males.

Rey is growing a little bit each day.
I think he polices the tree in the evening.

I would not be going near that tree in the evening. Rey can have it to himself.

Rey patrols the apple tree.

How is Rey doing? Are there any more?
I saw another nature programme the other night. The female chewed the head off the male and dropped it on the ground. Then she ate the rest of him.

Rey is getting bigger, I fed him(?) a worm from my strawberry plant yesterday. I have not found any others, but my orange tree is kinda dense and spotting any would be by shear luck.

I couldn't find Rey and I thought he moved on.
I did manage to spot him in my orange tree.
Much more foliage to hide in and probably more to eat.
