Hello all , I have a question . I recently adopted / bought a 4-5 year old Congo African Grey ( from some jerk on Craigslist who had him in a small cage etc) and will have him for about 2 months by the time I have to go on a business trip for 13 days . I also have a 1 year old who I’ve had sense he was a baby and the 1 year old and myself have bonded . The new grey steps up to me and we are starting to bond/ make a connection and is tolerating my one year old . My question is will the new grey hate me when I come back from my trip ? I’m a firefighter so I work a 24-48 schedule so they have me all day for two days at a time . My gf works a 9 to 5 job and she will be home to let them out and play all afternoon so his environment will not change just not me home like usual . Thanks in advance for the answers and any advice on continuing to possibly have him bond with my baby CAG will be great . Thank you again

I don't see that he would hate you, he will probably miss you though. Greys always remember family members, however long they have been away.

I suppose you could have your g/f do FaceTime(s) so at least he sees you and hears your voice. Don't know if it will help but wouldn't hurt.
That is one thing about these birds - they really do build bonds and so leaving for periods of time is tough.
On the other hand, the mere fact you rescued this guy from a bad situation and are as concerned as you obviously are makes me think he's got a bright future ahead!

Whenever we went away, my first grey would be mad at me for a while on our return. He would turn his back to me to let me know he was mad. He was a Velcro bird who always wanted to be with me so me being away was hard for him. Chyloe is her sweet loving self even after we have left her for a while.
I guess it depends on your bird's personality how he will react to your absence. One way or another, he will forgive you even if your absence upsets him for a time.

My birds have always been really happy to see me again after I travel. If I leave for a long time, then it takes several weeks to get back into the routine of things.
For me, the only concern with a new bird, is that he might decide to love your girlfriend and no longer want much to do with you.

My son tells me Beaker is fine with me being gone UNTIL he hears:
1. The garage door go up.
2. The car pulling in.
3. Any sound from me downstairs.
then he starts yelling for his buddy.
