Hi All After a little help if possible. I recently purchased an African grey and have been getting on great with her. However we have just recently purchased a perch for her see link www.zooplus.co.uk/shop/birds/cage_accessories/perches/188621She will not go on the perch at all in fact she seems absolutely petrified of it. I have tried putting some of her favourite food in the bowl, putting some of her favourite toys on there but she will just not go anywhere near it. Even if she is on my shoulder and I walk near it she will fly of my shoulder. Pebbles is 3 years old and I've had her for 4 weeks. Could anybody suggest a way to get her to use the perch. Many thanks in advance.

This is very common with Greys, they are usually very nervous of anything new and take ages to pluck up the courage to go on a new perch or play with a new toy. The stand you have bought has several areas of newness - the actual perches, the bowls and the base. Keep showing it to her, run your hands over it and make a big fuss of it. She should get over her fear but it might take time.

You bought the "parrot eating perch" which must be avoided.
I have a parrot eating grass mat and a parrot eating wicker hamper.

Chyloe is always afraid of new perches. She is even afraid of her old perches when I take them out of the cage to wash them. I've tried marking the exact position to ensure they are in the same place but she is still scared of them. She will huddle at the bottom of the cage for days even accessing her food by hanging off the bars.
It would take her months before she would go on the perch you bought for Pebbles. Keep trying to put her on it and she will eventually accept it.

Hi. We've only had our parrot for 3 weeks but he chewed his perch so I made some new ones out of brrom handles and a wooden grab rail. Cut to size and screwed he seems very happy as before he only had 1 now there's 4 different rails and they are different sizes too. These are available at builders merchants very cheap.

Around here, wooden broom handles are either painted or have a type of varnish so would not be suitable to make perches. I bought wooden dowels from the hardware store and cut them to size. A friend made the notches to fit them in the cage. Of course, Chy still chews them.
