Hi there. My good friend has an 11-month-old African Grey and she is very worried about him. He has started chewing on his chest and side feathers and they are all ragged. It seems he is past his baby molt? and the next one is supposed to be at about 18 months if we are right, so doesn't seem to be time for that yet. They are getting ready to go on a 3-week trip and are very worried about leaving him if this is anxiety plucking. Has anyone experienced this also? Attachments:

Hello and welcome to the forum. It could be a molt. That can be uncomfortable and make them pick at the feathers. Is there any evidence of pin feathers? Is there any evidence of molted feathers? Do you know if he gets sprayed, this can help.
If there are any changes going on around him due to the upcoming trip he could be picking up on that and getting anxious.

When Beaker was very young (less then two) he chewed up and yanked out his tail feathers.
Boy did he look funny!
It didn't help his balance when roosting either.
Just a phase I guess.

Had the same with our Africa grey. Now he has red feathers appearing all over his body . Some people have said it to do with his liver. Any advice or knowledge of this I would be glad to hear.

Yes I'm all too familiar with this. Ruby picked her chest feathers and a lot of her neck feathers back in November. We attributed it to my g/f going out of town. We took her to the vet who gave her a clean bill of health and all her feathers came back beautifully. Then, 2 weeks ago, she started doing the same thing. Now she looks somewhat ragged but seemingly has stopped pulling them out. All throughout, her behavior has been normal as is her weight. We spray her a lot and give her showers several times a week. And this time there were absolutely zero outside stressful incidents.
This is definitely one of the tough things about being an AG guardian. Could be a molt; could be hormonal. But at this point I've tried to stop stressing over it and go with beakertrout's "just a phase" sentiment because frankly there's not much else I can do!
