I'm looking for new puzzle toys for 22yo Tico. I've found some good ones over the years, but I'm always on the lookout for new, stimulating ones that I can place into her environment. Your suggestions?
Recently I got the "Tug N Slide Tower" by Creative Foraging Systems which keeps Tico occupied for awhile. It has a push-pull on top to drop the treat into the lower chamber. Its for bigger parrots and she has trouble pulling down the lower spring-loaded release for the (almond) treat to get freed from the lower chamber, but she has succeeded enough to keep at it. I had to help her understand the basic operation which took about a week and sometimes she just gives up.
Another puzzle that I & Tico like is a sort-of treasure box that hangs from a chain and has a combination twist lock. It didn't take long for her to learn how to open it (often hanging upside down), but I can position it in her large outdoor cage so she really has to work to unlatch it and get to the treats inside. I also move it around in the cage so she has to develop new strategies to open it.
These and others toys work in her large outdoor cage (6'x3'x4'), but her smaller indoor cage (36"x21"x30") doesn't have room for much. There I have a rotatory puzzle which attaches to the bars and she can solve in about 20 seconds. Tico also loves a cylindrical push-pull puzzle that dispenses small treats (like sunflower seeds) at the bottom. Her other smaller puzzles are easy for her to solve.
I also have wooden pieces hanging from a chain which she can chew. It doesn't take her long to destroy the wood once she gets into it, and the replacement pieces from the store are costly, so I've started to cut-up pieces of hobby balsa wood myself for her consumption.
I read on this forum about hanging cash-register-paper rolls as a chew toy but haven't tried it yet.
Any suggestion for other puzzles?
