Has any one tried putting some substance on fingers that would discourage the African Grey from biting without harming it?

Probably not a good idea when you are trying to form a bond.
I'll tell you a story about Beaker and my son.
It has taken over 5 years for Beaker to develop a relationship with my son.
When I first got him, Beaker would sit in his lap and was generally accepting of him.
Then it got to confrontational and nipping, lunging and general aggressiveness.
My son got the hint and would walk away and ignore him if Beaker went down those paths.
He would still play with him, but not if that behavior surfaced.
Now, Beaker yells for my son to come play with him, he will sit on his hand or shoulder and my son can literally stick his fingers in his beak and he will not get bitten.
They have formed a pretty good relationship and I am very happy.

If you do try something, I'd avoid anything spicy. They don't have the receptors to be affected by spicy foods, and if you accidentally rub your eyes, you'll be in a fair amount of pain!!
