I asked The Alex Foundation if Dr. Pepperberg's Alex understood the proper use of personal pronouns and used them accurately. Answer: "Dr. Pepperberg says that Alex understood "I tickle" vs. "You tickle" vs. "I tickle you," so I would say that anecdotally they can use personal pronouns accurately! However, we have never studied it with our birds in a formal way." I said to my Alex, "I'm so stoked," and Alex answered, "You're so stoked." I have never said "You're so stoked" to him before. He comes up with many original word combinations and phrases. One of my favorites: He says, "Merry Christmas!" Then he says, "Merry Alex!" He also says, "Happy bird," when he seems really happy. It is amazing how intelligent they are. I think they can understand a lot more than they can say too, in the same way that we can understand a foreign language more than we can speak it.
I remember watching Alex on TV and he could state differences between objects he had never seen before, such as size, shape, colour, and what they were made of.

That's amazing. Mine both talk, but not that well. They can only do pretty short sentences.
