My African Grey, Ole has been moulting & lost all of his red feathers. Since this has happened he has been preening himself around the area where the red feathers grow, so much so that he has made it bleed. We have taken him to the vet, the first time he gave him antibiotics & medicam to calm him down - this seemed to work. Then he started to pick again making it bleed, back to the vet & more antibiotics. Both visits the vet said he is healthy & seems happy. we are worried as he doesn't seem to be stopping the preening/picking and making it bleed. The vet explained that it was like a human having a scab that is itchy & they keep scratching, but we are worried that it is becoming habit forming. Can anyone help with this as we are really worried about him.

Hello and welcome to the forum. It can be difficult to get them to stop once they have started. You could try putting plenty of chewable toys in the cage to try to distract him, things he can fray and chew up. Spraying him with pure aloe vera juice might also help.

Thank you Jane for replying, we will try the aloe vera spray. We have been adding new things for his to "wreck" & trying to keep him occupied, even sits on my husbands knee being stroked like a cat. It's horrible seeing him bleeding & not being able to help. He is such a funny little man who gives us loads of pleasure. Just want him better.
