Sooooo have had mygirl RJ for a few months now and we have a lot of progress with the plucking she now has soft fluffy feathers on her chest and has a couple of pin feathers breaking through yay... so for those with birds that pluck there is hope Still a lot of work to do with the staying on my wrist not my shoulder ... no blood loss so far hahaha just a few small nips and scratches from claws on skin... that can sting abit. Still no luck with trying new food it all gets thrown on the floor but will keep trying. She still will only come to me but earlier this week while I was at work she flew into a new room she decided that my husband was less scary than a new room so kinda progress. Am so glad to have found this forum I have found it more help full than anything I have read thank you all.

That is great!!
Have you tried eating the new foods in front of her? That usually does it for my two. Especially Manzi, he always has to try what I'm eating.
I use nail clippers to trim their nails. I know it is time because I start having little scabs on my hands/wrists. Then I clip on the sharp tips of their nails. I don't clip much at all, so I don't have to worry about hitting the quick. FYI, I use a towel to clip their nails, so since your girl is new it might be best to wait on that. You don't want to ruin the trust you're working on.

frostbug- No blood yet? Are you sure you have a Grey? The new feathers coming in after plucking are as you describe. Sounds like the problem is resolving. Mine is going on 16 years old, never plucked until he reached sexual maturity (about age 8) and then it absolutely broke my heart. I assumed I was guilty of not providing something he needed. Tore me up. But, it is a seasonal thing, and he has completely refeathered about three times now after the plucking got bad over the seasons. My avian vet said if you have a Grey, you have a 50% chance he will pluck. Mine's got a bare belly now, but the fluffies are coming back in. Like you say, there is hope! Our Bob is COMPLETELY SPOILED-- two full-time caretakers, everything cleaned at least once a day, lots of interaction, eats with us, sleeps with us, etc. We follow a very healthy mediterranean diet, and share everything with him. As for "coming to you", they will do what THEY want, when THEY want. Adele, you are a braver one than I am! I would trim my cockatiels feathers, but for nails, I always got the vet, if only so the bird would hate him instead of me. This shouldn't need to be done more than twice a year. When they are young, the toenails can turn into hypodermic needles seemingly overnight. As for exposure to new rooms, situations, people, remember to be calm, talk softly, and no sudden surprises! Good luck with RJ. I hope you have a long, happy relationship. It's hard work, but how many people can say they have a wild animal as companion? Shows you are a special kind of person!
