Saturday is the usual day for Beaker's "air bath".
Today I knew he knew what day it was just because of his demeanor about getting on my hand (he wouldn't).
No amount of coaxing would work, and the almost foolproof method I use where I go downstairs and then he climbs off his cage and waits at the top of the stairs for me wasn't working.
Ok for you Mr. Bird.
The other sure fire method is to get some ice and head upstairs.
Beaker hears the ice maker, and he knows I am going upstairs, and if he goes, he gets a piece of STARBURST.
Sure enough, as I walk past his cage he is waiting for me.
I stick my hand out, he climbs aboard, then I head right back into the kitchen and stick the ice in the freezer and start heading downstairs.
Beaker is staring at me like,"You SOB you tricked me!".
He was pretty docile with his air bath, he resigned himself to getting one and me winning this round I think.

In an effort to teach Ruby more words I used to ask her "Do you want to take a shower?". This worked pretty well - until she figured out what the word "shower" actually meant. Now when she hears the word (even if it's not meant for her and she's just overhearing someone else's conversation) she immediately goes in between the bars at the top of her cage, making it extremely difficult (if not impossible) to get her out. Any request to her to 'step up' is completely ignored, even though she's generally quite reliable with that command, and may god help you if you decide to stick your fingers close to her at that moment.  Funny part is she actually seems to enjoy her shower(s) - it's just getting there that's the problem. |

My son and I never mention the breeder/groomers name when Beaker is due for his clipping.
He will stay in his cage.

When I was taking Chy for her checkup, she refused to come out of her cage. She couldn't see the travel cage from where she was but she somehow knew I was taking her. She kicked up quite a fuss. I had to remove her toys so I could get hold of her to pull her out of her cage. Then when she was in the travel cage, she tried sweet talking me. They really are incredible birds.

Haz, There is a vet in my area who will come to our house for routine grooming. It's worth $60--$75 to avoid the trauma of getting Bob
into a carrier and taking chances in traffic, waiting in the waiting room, etc. "Dr. Don" has a Mobile Van and is a great guy. I always tip the young helper who has to hold the bird in a towel for the procedure, as he (the bird, that is) screams like he has been set on fire and is slowly burning though the entire procedure, which takes all of about two minutes!

Haz-also the "sweet talking". I have seen my Grey use petulance and screaming to get his way, and, if ignored, he will suddenly switch to "charming". Typical male! Then I get, "Hi Sweetie! You're a cutie!"

Our only certified avian vet is on the other side of the city and would not have time to make house calls. I am the assistant that holds Chy while she is groomed. She doesn't usually make a fuss although she does ask to go home while I am paying the vet bill.
