I was watching a TV programme last night and a Great Bowerbird in Australia had been building a large display to attract females. This was made of anything the bird had found - plastic forks, pieces of string, bottle tops, stones etc. He would then rearrange the items and continually add to the display - often by raiding another Bowerbird's display which leads to a fight if he gets caught. One bird had stolen a toy car and a red heart made of sponge from another bird. He thought he had attracted a female but it turned out to be a juvenile male. Not only that but the juvenile male then flew off with the red heart!

What was the program called? That sounds really interesting.

It was Planet Earth II with David Attenborough. It was a series of nature programmes each focusing on a different theme and their animals - Islands, Mountains, Jungles, Deserts, Grasslands, Cities. The Bowerbirds were in the Cities episode. The series is going to be shown on BBC America starting 28 January 2017.

Oh this is good to know. I have had BBC America as the selected channel most days for Sasha.

I watched the Bowerbird section of the programme again, it is just so funny. The display is built up over a number of years and the bird spends two hours a day rearranging the items. When a female arrives, the male selects the best items to present to her.

I saw previews of Planet Earth II. I didn't realize that it is already out. I'll have to go get it. I loved the first Planet Earth series.

Don't be too sad when you see the hatchling turtles, it didn't say in the programme but after they were filmed they were all actually rescued by the Barbados Sea Turtle project and taken to the sea.

We've now watched the first two of the series. Seeing the poor penguins trying to make it back on the island during a storm was pretty harsh. I watched the segment afterward on filming it and sometimes these things seem so sad.
Good to know about the turtles. I'll keep that in mind. A couple years ago while in Mexico we were able to help with a turtle release. We had to wait till it was too dark for the birds to pick them out of the water. Even though I held the little guy for just a few minutes, I get so attached and want him to succeed!!
