Thank you! Yes, I totally need to quit smoking and I will definitely check out the hepa filter. I just remembered two things. When Rocky was younger and I lived in a condo, the neighbor burned a teflon pan and all 3 of my birds needed to be rushed to the vet but the fumes wound up killling my conure. Maybe this has something to do with this noise he is making now, Also, our basement has been getting wet and there is a small amount of mold on a couple of the cinderblocks. Maybe this is also contributing to this noise. The basement will be waterproofed at the end of the month so that will take care of the damp basement. I am going to shut the heating vent by his cage and try the sleeping cage again.

With mold, dampness, a dust generator and smoking, you are lucky it isn't you making the breathing noise.
Oh wait, you did say you snore..........
Your birds lungs may have been stressed enough that it (the sound) is manifesting now with everything else around.
A good HEPA isn't cheap.

It sounds like a respiratory issue. If you haven't already told your avian vet about the mold, please make sure you do.

I most certainly will be reaching out to my avian vet today to let her know about the mold in the basement. It's a very small amount but you never know.

As soon as I saw your video I had a light bulb pop up over my head. I have myself been making almost that exact same sound while sleeping.it will haunt my dreams and eventually wake me. I have athsma, and acquired a severe case on bronchitis to go with it.
Mostly, I can hear a Rice Crispies sound effect as I breath. Mucus in my lungs I guess, getting pushed together and pulled apart. Icky, yes I know. But when the mucus has subsided, I make that exact same creaking/squeaking sound. Your Grey might have a breathing problem. Check for mold.
However, if she is doing this only while awake, she may be imitating a sound that she can hear that you can not. I believe my Beau is doing this with our front door. Whenever anyone comes in or looks like they are going out, she does a "Whoooossshhhhh!" Sound. I'm thinking it's the sound the screen door dampener makes when its actuated. I can't hear it, it's out of my range of hearing (20 years of jet engine noise) but I bet it's within her range of hearing. The sounds I heard your bird making sounded very rhythmic, like a breathing issue. So best start there.
Good luck

Well, it's a couple months later and my avian vet cannot find anything wrong with Rocky. They did all kinds of tests and it's not his lungs or a breathing problem or a respiratory issue. The mold on the corner of the wall in my basement was nothing according to the vet and the hepa filter is not helping either. She said it is a behavioral issue and just continue to ignore it and eventually it will stop. Anyone have any other ideas? There must be something i can do other than ignore it. Here are two videos and I will post some more in the next day or so. Please read through my posts for the history and help, anyone, please. I will take any ideas or suggestions.

It is good the vet has found nothing wrong with Rocky. I think it must be something he is imitating. Both those videos sound like the sort of noises chickens make.

Doesn't sound to me like anything is amiss.
Beaker has made similar noises, I assumed they were noises to help him feel more secure.

I know I'm late to this subject, I hope you figured it out. I whatched the videos, you said that you lost 2 birds. I think your AG might just be lonely, I'm not saying get another bird, but you might want to try spending more time with your baby. I wouldn't go as far to say and behavioral issue that's too strong a word. I'm also not saying devote all of your time to the bird. What I do when I enter the room is say hi to both my birds by name. I let them out on their perches when I'm sitting in the living room. I talked to them constantly even when I'm in another room I Whistle and click and tell them what I'm doing, I asked them what they are doing. At night I leave the TV on or radio softly so there's constant noise, and they don't feel so alone. I think silence in a house will drive a bird crazy, Whether it would lead to screaming to get attention,or the wimpering that I hear your bird doing. I change toys out regularly, and I use a lot of shredder toys with treats in them. Birds have very deep emotions, they mate for life, they are flock animals and will almost always stay with the same flock for life. So when they lose a companion, like another bird or a person they will grieve and grieve for very long time I've seen it. Try keeping an upbeat and positive attitude with your bird I think you'll see some improvement. I really hope that this helps, or that you've already found a solution. Also puzzle games are a great way to spend quality time.

Hello there,
I recently have been searching the internet about a problem that I am experiencing with my African Grey Parrot. I ran into this post and noticed that I have the exact same problem with yours.
My parrot makes the exact same crying kind-of noise. He mostly makes the sound while sleeping but I have noticed that he sometimes makes it while cleaning his feathers etc. I am very worried and I cannot sleep because I can't stop thinking about the possible problem he might have. I am not sure of his age and he doesn't leave his cage very much.
I was wondering if you have come up with any solutions or updates about your parrot? I would really appreciate if you can help me or give me some advice, I really don't know what to do.
Thanks anyway, I hope your parrot got better.

Hey there!! Did you find out what the reason of this sounds was? My African Grey makes the same sounds, but it’s like he is ill or something... it looks like he cannot breath well... what have you done??

Hello helenpikos and welcome to the forum.
African Greys are prone to respiratory problems. If your Grey has laboured breathing (rather than just making noises that could be imitating something) he should be checked by an avian vet. Is he like it all the time?
