Hey all.. I was recently given an older grey.. he was with his owner for 7 years and she couldnt keep him anymore.. so I willingly took him in.. We got everything.. cage and all... I was wondering how long should it take for him to get accustomed to his new surroundings and new family? Does anyone have any suggestions to help me out? He hasnt really made any noises or moved much... I have a sun conure as well (Dave) and he has been good.
Thanks

Hello and welcome to the forum. It will take time for him to get used to his new surroundings and family but it isn't easy to say how long this will take because although Greys in general are nervous they are all individual and some settle quicker than others. It is normal for him to be quiet during this time; Greys often respond to change by stopping talking or being quieter than usual. Just go at his pace and spend as much time as you can talking to him.

Welcome to the forum.
As Jane said, you need to let the bird set the pace. It is more surprising when a grey settles in quickly. If your grey was bonded to its original family, it will take more time. These birds have emotions like a child and it will be upset at losing its loved ones. Talk to him often and give him treats so you can make friends with him.

Thanks everyone.. Gino seems to be warming up slowly but the vocalizations have improved and i can now pet and scratch his neck and head I have another quick question.. it seems that he was only given sunflower seeds and regular dinner food as his primary diet? i know it is like changing a toddlers diet but should i cut out the sunflower seeds all together and start him on a pellet only until he eats or slowly wean him away from them.. or should i just continue with the sunflower... he seems to eat whatever we are eating at dinner, steamed veggies fruits pasta even chicken etc...
Thanks all... Val

They can be very stubborn about changing their diet. You will need to go slowly and gradually wean him off sunflower seeds. You might need to try different types of pellets until you find one that he will eat. Also give him fruit, nuts and vegetables. Still let him have some of your healthy food.

My grey, Sheeba, eats a saffflower seed mix. I also add roasted unsalted pistachios and Zupreem pellets. A few times a day I give her some Avi-cake pieces, it's made by Lefeber. Plus a variety of apples, broccoli, corn and whatever it is we are eating. She also likes steamed vegetables, cooled off, of course. If you try a variety of different healthy things, you'll be able to see what he prefers.

Almonds are part of Chy's daily food. She won't eat hazelnuts but you can try them with Gino.
