Hey everybody, we are going to be getting our new baby at the end of October so we're trying to learn as much as possible because we are fairly new to birds. We're a family of 4, kids are 9 and 12. We also have 3 Great Danes, 2 that were born deaf. I'm not getting a lot of positive info on having dogs and birds together. Our dogs are a huge (not just cause they're danes!) part of our family and our bird will be too. We plan on bringing a stuffed animal that the baby has been around to help familiarize the dogs to the birds scent and offering all kinds of awesome treats so they will see the scent as a positive thing. Any other advice, experience, or info anybody can offer??

Hello and welcome to the forum. I don't have any other animals but Greys often take the role of the "top dog" rather than the other way round. Greys need a lot of attention. I once looked after a neighbour's cat and I was worried that my parrots would be afraid of it but the cat looked into the room where their cage was, started to walk in and was greeted by a huge growl from Mitzi. The cat fled upstairs and never went near them again. I am not sure about the idea of the soft toy with the birds scent.

Oh my goodness that is too funny!! I just figured the dogs would see the scent as something positive if they were offered yummy treats when sniffing it. I was starting to get a little discouraged hearing some of the things being said in one bird group, then I posted in one of the deaf dane groups and a guy said he had an exotic bird rescue and his danes do just fine but suggested I let things happen at their own pace.

Crazydanesmom,
I live in a household that consist of 2 humans, 3 dogs, 2 cats and 4 parrots (an African Grey in the home and 3 Indian Ringnecks in an aviary). I have never had an issue with the two older dogs or the cats that wanted to threaten any of my birds. I've even had the African Grey's cage open quite a few times with the cats in the same room without any incident although I made sure I was in a position to intervene if needed. One of the cats' favorite sleeping spots was on top of the Ringneck cage before I moved them to the aviary.
My only issue is our 3 months old Jack Russell pup that mainly due to it's youth consider the birds as playthings and charges at the aviary or cage. Luckily a sharp ''No!'' usually stops her in her tracks. The CAG's cage is out of her reach and even if it was I'm convinced a warning bite from the bird would discourage any further ''investigation''.
Considering there aren't any other birds in your household (sounds like) some curiosity on the part of the Danes would be totally normal. Your best option is to let them satisfy their curiosity if they pose no actual threat to the bird. Keep the bird caged (or the dogs out of the same room) until it's clear that they figured out that none of them is a threat to the other.

Hi, I too have a new bird. It has been in my home for about a month or so (cant keep up exactly how long) and so far it has been great! I have two cats, three house dogs, lots of aquariums (covered) and a pair of sugar gliders. The gliders will not be out at the same time as the parrot, btw. And so far it has been great, one cat totally ignores the parrot, the other sort of yawns, and the dogs seem to have accepted the newest member of the family!
