Hi everyone! So glad to see there's s forum to ask questions and get suggestions from other owners. I recently inherited Charlie...he's 17 years old and has gone through two other owners. I've known him for two years now and I just love him. However, when it comes to a shower or beak and nail trim, his previous owner did this once every other month; yet, with me Charlie just won't allow me to shower him or trim him without lashing out to bite. He's been with me for 7 months one-on-one and him and I are constantly whistling tunes with one another or sharing kiss sounds. I'd just love to groom him and hold him like his previous owners. He will allow me through the cage massage his beak. Any suggestions would be appreciated. Thanks!

Hello and welcome to the forum. It is very common that Greys will have an individual and different relationship with each person they know and will only allow some to do certain things. You could try taking him into a room he is less familiar with as this often makes them more docile. Use treats to encourage and reward him. Nail trimming perches can help with keeping the nails groomed. Mine have them and I never have to trim their nails. Not all Greys enjoy being showered or sprayed but it is good for them. Try using a small spray bottle, spray some on your hand and get excited about what fun it is.

I give Beaker "air baths" as he doesn't care for showers, although he still gets those once in awhile. As for beak and nail (he gets clipped also) I take him to the breeder/groomer as I would rather he hate her then me. Boy, does he put on the show when she gets him. It always ends the same. Clipped, groomed and red faced. At least I don't get bit!

My grey, Sheeba, is large, feisty and aggressive so the avian vet gets to cut her nails and trim her beak. Her beak grows in crooked on occasion and it's worth the $40 every 4 months or so to have it done fast and efficiently by the vet. My previous grey, Manfred was easy to trim his nails, just wrap him in a towel and trim them, have a container of Quikstop handy in case the nail bleeds a bit.
Since you just adopted Charlie, I wouldn't put him under any stress, like trimming his nails. He may associate it with you and it could undo any trust he as with you.
