Hello,
This is my first post and I apologise if this query has been raised before but I am really hoping for some advice.
I brought my eleven week old African grey home yesterday afternoon. Although he did not seem as used to human contact as I had hoped he has really come along in leaps and bounds. The breeder told me that he was still in his last week of weaning and that he was to have one feed a day at night.
wHen I questioned if he was allowed fruit and veg , the breeder told me definitely.
I was told to place the perches literally just above the bottom of the cage as he had only just begun to perch. the breeder advised to put his food right in front of him. I purchased a huge bag of the pellets from the breeder.
As soon as wolf was placed in his cage he climbed up the bars to the top of the cage and just hung there using his beak. I padded the bottom of the cage in case he fell but was still worried as his cage is quite large 5ft by 4ft.
I attempted to separate the cage keeping wolf at the bottom, but he simply pushed passed my barricade so in the end I placed a perch in the middle of the cage. He will now sometimes sit on this but usually prefers to stand on the edge of the food bowls.
My main concern is that although water and food is available in the middle and bottom of the cage, I have yet to see him eat or drink.
I hand fed him yesterday with a syringe using his formula, I also mashed some banana and added boiling water, once cooled he did accept this.
Today he has not touched the pellets again or any of the tiny pieces of apple and carrot that were in his cage.
I have hand fed him three times today using a syringe. I did try scrambled egg but he does not seem to understand solids at all.
Please can anyone advise as I am not really sure what to do next.
Many thanks
