Hey everyone! My name is Rosie and I have just gotten a 5 month old African Grey! She just came home 5 days ago! She sings all day and is so active in her cage! Her wings are not clipped but I am still not sure if she even knows how to fly yet, I am nervous about taking her out of the cage until she starts listening to me and learning to step up. Is this a good idea to wait? She lets me hand feed her but is still very nervous when I put my hand close to her and will occasionally bite but sometimes she licks as well. Any tips on getting her more comfortable with the idea of stepping up onto my hand or arm, and also when to let her out of the cage? I also have noticed she is quite picky and won't eat the new sweet potato treats I have bought and also isn't fond of vegetables (sigh) I hope she will grow out of this, she only like peanuts and seeds which I know are high in fat! Any tips at all would be amazing! Thank you!

Hello and welcome to the forum. Yes, just take things slowly and go at her pace. She will gradually get used to everything. Make sure you don't make any sudden movements and don't pull your hand away. They often want to explore a hand to see if it is suitable to perch on. They can be nervous of hands and you can often get nearer to them if you put your hands behind your back. Offer her treats so she learns your hands are safe. Eating vegetables in front of her should encourage her to try them.

I was able to successfully convert my seed eater when he was 10+ by taking the seed out at night, putting the veggies in first thing in the morning, eating next to the cage. After he ate breakfast I would put the seed dish back in. I then started mixing pellets into the seed mix and he now eats 70% veggies and the pellet seed mix. (3 parts pellets and 1 part seed mix (no sunflower/peanuts). If she really likes the sunflower seed it might become a good training treat. This is a great forum to ask questions, much less drama than some others. Best of luck to you and your new birdie!
