I want to specify gizmo is my boxer. I do not have a grey yet but am in love with them and am looking to contact a breeder. I have a vacation coming so I definitely won't get one until July - August. I have looked on a few sites and found that the fee is from $350-$1600. Can anyone explain why the extreme difference in cost. What age is recommended to leave a breeder and still bond well with a family? I've seen a number of listings that say the age is young, what qualifies as young in a grey (12 mo or like 5 yr old). Just trying to do all research and get as much info as possible before I begin looking for one. Thank you in advance.

Welcome.
You are doing the right thing by checking out breeders.
I visited Beaker for a few months before the breeder would let me take him.

Welcome to the forum.
The extreme price difference could be for different reasons. A Timneh grey is smaller than a Congo and costs less. A breeder will charge less than a retail pet store.
I have never seen any grey priced at $350. It would make me very suspicious wondering what was wrong with it.
Pet stores charge about a thousand dollars more for a grey than a breeder would. You also would get a less socialized bird as pet store birds are not usually handled. Your best bet is to buy from a breeder who hand-raises the birds.
A breeder will let the bird go to a home when it is fully weaned which is usually from 12 to 14 weeks old. If the breeder is close to you, you will be able to visit the baby until it is ready to come home. My first grey was 4 weeks old when I started visiting him at the breeder. I visited him every week until he came home.
Because greys can live very long lives, they can still be considered young when they are a few years old. However, the older they are, the more time it will take for them to bond with you.
Having a grey to love and have it love you back is wonderful.

Thank you guys for responding. Do either of you know any reputable breeders in North Carolina? On the east coast I only know one person to contact, she is very good and could probably help you. Here is her info: greyparrotconsulting.com

I am up in Canada so can't help you there. Perhaps others on the forum may know of someone.

Happy to say that I found a breeder who specializes in Greys only. I still hShe has a clutch of 4 in the nesting box now so one of them will be my little munchkin. So excited...if its a boy will be be fisher, girl will be Lola.

That is very exciting! Will you be able to visit while they are young (before you actually take him/her home)?

Absolutely will. Yes, the breeder will call me when they are out of the nesting box for a few days and I will be able to visit then and hopefully let one of them pick me. They are only 30min away so I'm sure the breeder will get tired of seeing my face.

You are sure to fall in love the instant you meet your baby. That is what happened to me with my first grey, love at first sight.

Odd question...I'm on Facebook, not obsessed by any means but tried to look for an AG group and there is nothing like that on there. Is there one and I'm just oblivious to it or do most AG owners just do forums?
