Studies have shown that Robins, Blackbirds and seagulls are singing day and night because light from street lamps and homes is disrupting their body clocks. Singing uses energy and their health might be at risk as a result. Perhaps plans to switch off street lamps at night might be a good idea after all.

This is the first I have heard about birds singing at night. If anyone over here suggested turning off street lights, the government would never hear the end of it.

Thank you for that link beakertrout.
Regarding the street lamps, some local councils have been switching them off at night to save money but a lot of people are not happy about it, for safety and security reasons.

Poor birds. Perhaps new forms of lighting may help.

In CA, there are many cities, including my local neighborhood, where the residents have petitioned and won to get the street lamps turned off. I find it incredibly inconvenient when going for a walk after dark. I never thought of the disruption to birds.
In MN, the birds would start chirping in the spring around 4:30am! I remember that being pretty awful. There weren't street lamps around either, but there were lots of trees just outside my window to give the noisy birds plenty of perches.
