Birds such as geese and swans that fly in a V formation do so for the overall benefit of the flock. The bird in the lead uses the most energy while the following birds get extra lift from the air currents created. They take it in turns to lead.

Our local TV weatherman is a smarty pants. One day he asked if we knew why one side of the V formation was always longer than the other. His answer was that the longer side had more birds in it.
We have lots and lots of Canada geese around here. I love to see them flying over, honking all the way.
