I didn't consider the salmonella part. I just asked our poultry researcher and she recommended to not let the birds play with the egg cartons, although she wasn't sure it was a real threat. Anyway, Susan I'm glad you brought up that point. I'll stick to other cardboard pieces.

If you are on Facebook there are two groups you might find interesting; one is parrots pantry they have lots of food recipes and the other is parrots toy workshop and they have some great ideas for making toys.

We call Jazz our little wood chipper supreme. We thought that we would get him stocked up on a bunch of toys his first Christmas. We dropped $350 on toys, he had them demolished within the week. All except the plastic puzzle one that he likes to open & close. So I threw in the towel & started getting baby toys, party favors, chains, making wood blocks in our wood shop & whatever other random cheap items I find that are safe for him. Luckily he's good about typically only playing what he's given & doesn't go in search of things to destroy in the house. But, keeping him going on hand made toys is a full time job, he's so active. So I try to get things that are plastic, thick wood, or puzzle like to last long enough to give me a break.

I can't find the "parrots toy workshop" on FB but I think I found the Parrots Pantry one. I misquoted the name... try parrot's workshop. They have ideas for home made toys, perches, stands etc. and have a number of sources for toy parts.

you can use any food coloring to dye the toys. I believe from the parrot's workshop many people use Wilton brand food coloring and they mix it with alcohol to dye with. The alcohol evaporates and it keeps wood parts from getting moldy. I know my first attempt at dying wood beads I hadn't know about the alcohol and the beads did get moldy and I had to throw them out. Just a heads up... I hardly ever post on those pages, the people there are very opinionated and can get a little aggressive. This is a much better forum to ask questions in. I just take the ideas or recipes and keep it moving.

Beaker really wanted the bubble wrap I was popping so I gave it to him. He managed to pop a few then let it float to the floor. Right after it hit, he started imitating the sound as if to say,"Who needs you?" Attachments:
