I got Hector a swing for Christmas and he hasn't figured out how to use it yet either. He will move it and even reach through it to get a toy but he doesn't step on it. Give her time, she'll figure it out. It took him a quite a few months to start using the flat perch I put in. Now he loves it and uses it all the time.

Mitzi had a swing once. The trouble was that it was a rope swing and she kept chewing through it while sitting on it. In the end I couldn't mend it anymore and had to remove it. I think the fact that it was something she could chew up overcame her fear of the swing.

Chy had a real swing but just chewed it to pieces. She has a ring of wooden blocks that she will swing on while chewing the blocks.

Another huge breakthrough! Trixie now eagerly takes sunflower seeds from my hand!!! I've started saying "Good girl!" with every seed, hoping that she will associate the words with the treat. Maybe eventually I can use this to train her? I've never trained a parrot before; Koba was totally his own bird, doing his own thing.
Trixie is sweet and dainty, much more a lady-bird. Thanks to Lenke, we've started calling her Trixie-Doodle, lol

Wooo-hoooooooo! Trixie came out of the cage for the first time today!!! With a lot of "good-girl"s (ie, sunflower seeds) to encourage her along. And to get her back in the cage... SHE STEPPED UP ONTO MY HAND!!!!!!!!!!!! Not a chomp taken!

HOORRRAAAAYYYYY! Another major breakthrough --- Trixie let me scratch her head, several times for a couple of seconds each time!
I've been dreaming of the time Trixie was tame enough to let me tickle her!!!!!!

That is brilliant. They can be so fussy about who they will allow to do that. She will soon have you doing it all day.

One year later: Trixie is an active, beloved member of our household now. She loves her showers (well okay, she tolerates them) and is now learning to eat some people food - such as Snickerdoodles! Flying is NOT her strong point, thank God! Nor is using a swing - perches don't move, thank you very much!

That is great to hear. Is Trixie allowing for scratches? These guys are so variable in their personalities and how they process new information.

I like the pictures of Trixie. She seems like a nice bird. How old is Trixie?

Trixie and I are nicely bonded now. She loves her tickles, will at least taste people-food, and is not too sure about toys. For showers, I place my cane (I am handicapped) across the tub, edge to edge. Trixie perches on that while I turn on the shower and slide the cane back and forth till she gets full benefits of the water. Then I switch to bathtub mode andshe sits and basks in the steamy heat while I have a good long soak. Trixie is now about 19 years old.
