Last Friday the 13th, we welcomed Trixie - Noelle into our home. Koba's shocking death left a huge hole in me, and a neighbor needed to get rid of her bird (I can't think of a gentler way to say it, but she was very sad to have to let Noelle go.) So we now have Trixie. She is very disoriented, rather scared. Our doxie Shiloh is way too interested in her, so Trixie stays in the big cage. But Trixie is finding out that if she dances back and forth, then the dog barks and we yell at the dog. Trixie is 12 years old, apparently talks but has not so far - although she is currently meowing at the dog. She is eating kibbles - hooray! Her "new" cage is 4' x 4' x 2', compared with her old 18" x 18" x 12" cage. She is obviously a she because she lays eggs. This is the only reason I'd'ver preferred a male - I dread getting an eggbound bird.

Congratulations on getting Trixie. It will take a while for her to feel at home.
When my first grey died, I didn't start to feel better until I decided to get another. Max will always be in my heart, but Chy gives us so much love and laughter.
The photo of Trixie looks just like Chy when we first brought her home. She huddled in the corner of her cage. When our cockatiel was laying eggs, we were told to put her to bed early. I didn't think greys laid eggs as much as cockatiels. Make sure she gets enough calcium.
Let us know how she settles in.

How is Trixie coming along?
When I first got Maui, she laid 5 eggs (about 1-2 days apart each). Then she laid eggs once per year, but hasn't laid eggs the past two years. I don't think laying eggs is too much of a problem unless it is out of control. 5 eggs or so every 6 months isn't a big deal.

Trixie is coming along okay. She loves to dump her food and water, so we had to get really humongous doggie bowls and put them at the bottom of her cage so she can't dump them. And I had to put some heavy stones in her food (she eats kibbles) dish as well!
She is a biter. And the dogs have discovered that they can nibble at her and her beak will nibble right back. In this larger cage (4' x 3' x 2') she is close enough to the floor that the weeners can reach up on hind legs when Trixie is on the cage floor - where she usually hangs out.
There are 2 swings in the upper 1/4 of the cage - Trixie has definitely never been on a swing! She doesn't seem to be able to figure them out, so she avoids that part of the cage.
I am thinking about letting her out a bit today. My easy chair is right up against the cage, so I should be able to keep her safe and sound. Or... maybe it'll be better to wait some more? She was in a tiny cage in her old home, but I know her mommy let her out a lot. (Trixie did not like her old daddy one bit!)

Trixie is settling down a bit more. She is not really interested in coming out of her cage - and that is fine with me. The dogs are a little bit (lot!) too fascinated with her, after killing one Koba P.Arrot. (I still mourn him!)Anyway, here's a quick pict of Herself: She loves to sway back and forth - sort of a dance type of moving. So cute!

So I guess you guys survived the storm!! They told us we were getting 3 - 6 inches and we ended up with 14 but thankfully my next door neighbor got a snow blower and did the driveway, so I only had to shovel from the house to car. I'm so ready for this winter to be over. I'm glad Trixie is acclimating a little more. Maybe keep the dogs out of the room and leave the door open for her and she'll come out and explore a little more.

Lets see if a video will upload?
Nope. I gotta post it to utube first, and I don't want to do that. O well.....

DH serenading Trixie with his American Indian flute. I am curious, does she seem to enjoy it, or maybe fearful . I know Sid is afraid of anything with that shape, but then they don't make music.

Actually I think she is a bit afraid of it. But she doesn't run-hide, just kind of fluffs up and watches him eagle-eyed. She has swayed back and forth a wee bit at the music.

Does Trixie take treats from your hand? How is your relationship with her moving along?

She is still too shy to take anything willingly from my hand. I am half wondering if she will ever be tame enough to come out and be my pet bird? I SOOO miss my Koba! Trixie won't hardly even talk!
I want a sociable bird who will want to be with me and show some personality!

I thought that Sid would never trust us again due to his neurosis, but he did , it took a a lot patience and at least 3 years. don't give up on her.

Today Trixie actually took a sunflower seed from my hand! Woo-hoo! Very gentle, no attempt to chomp down hard like before! Yay!

Here is Trixie in her cage, munching a toilet paper tube. She has her water dish and food dish on the floor of the cage - this seems to be where she is most comfortable hanging out. I tried to get her on the swing, but no way! She was terrified - perches simply do not move, in her prior world. She likes her bells and so on. I have to have the dishes big and on the cage floor because... Trixie will dump them! Yep, shovel the innards out, pick up an edge and raise it high so all the food spills onto the paper below the grid. Then she wonders why there's no food or water for her, little monkey! So I got big heavy dog-food bowls and that took care of that, lol!
