Hey, am so happy i joined this so that i can talk with you guys about my african grey. Well first, i have him since 2 months or less, he became attached to me somehow because he doesnt make noises when i approach him and he lets me scratch for him but he never let any male approach which is kinda weird!! If you guys might know why please let me know.. Thanks.. However the sad part is that i took him to a vet 2 weeks ago and he clipped my koukou's feather and gave him an injection to prevent him from getting flue.. Recently he is been sleeping all day long and is being extra quite he doesnt even eat alot until today i took him to an avian vet a new one lol, and i was sadly been told that he is really sick and extra slim , he doesnt eat veggies or fruits so the doc gave me some calcium and vitamins to mix with water, and am going to start feeding him fresh juices and that.. And m givin him antibiotics for a week.. Hopefully by a week he will get better what really SHocked me today was that the vet told me he is an adult btween 5 and 15 years old though when i got him they said he is about to turn 1 year in 2 months and i love him so much even if he is a little older, iam just wondering if in such age he can still learn how to talk.. would please advice me .. Thank you guys i know its a full story but im really desperate.

Welcome Mayassa and Koukou! A few questions for you. What did the Avian vet diagnose KouKous's sickness as? What does Koukou usually eat? What is the name of the antibiotic that Koukou is taking? These will help us to understand the situation more clearly to help you. I hope Koukou is already starting to fell better.

Hello and welcome to the forum. It is quite common for Greys to prefer one gender over the other. My female Grey prefers females to males and she will tolerate women she doesn't know but she really dislikes men she doesn't know and will growl very loudly at them.
Regarding age, when they are babies the eyes are all black and then they change through pale grey to pale yellow during the first two years of life. Once the eyes have reached the adult colour it is difficult to tell how old they are so I am not sure why the vet is suggesting between 5 and 15. What colour were his eyes when you first got him?

Hello thanks for replying, well the vet did not tell me exactly his problem he is havin diarrhea and he spilled twice jelly substances first it was brownish and the second white thats why i took him in the first place and when i told him that he does not eat veggies and citamins he directly said this is a problem and gave me calcium and vitamins to mix with water twice per day, and antibiotics tube to give him through his beak( since i dont know how ti give it to him theough injection) for a week, he said he is so unhealthy and sick, after a week iam going to take him there back to check him and make some more tests to be sure that all his organs are working well, he doesnt eat much anymore he is eating twice max per day and a very small amount is this normal? And about his eyes when he is relaxed its totally black and when he is eating it is yellow bright yellow ill upload a picture for him soon.. Any advices? Thank youu

One more question please, is there still a high possibility for my baby to learn how to talk even he is an adult?

What was he eating before he got ill? What does he eat now? Have you tried hand feeding him with baby food such as fruit and vegetable puree? Regarding talking, it is difficult to say because some start at a few months old, some at a year or even two. If he really is over 5 he might not. I have one who talks, she started at 5 months and is 20 years old now, and one who has never talked and he is 22 years old.

Maybe try taking the seeds out when you put him to bed, then start the day with the veggies. After an hour or two you can put the seeds back in. They usually like to eat first thing in the morning and might be more likely to try the veggies. That's how I encouraged my guy to change. He was 11 and always ate seeds. I also had to try different shapes before I found what he liked. He doesn't like any big chunks, but does like match stick size so that he can pick it up to nibble. He also doesn't like anything messy and I found if I put yogurt or applesauce in a plastic bottle cap he'll pick it up to eat it. Keep experimenting until you find something that works.

So sorry to hear that. From what you described it sounds like he had been very ill for some time. Birds hide illness for as long as they can and that means they can be getting ill without you knowing.

Mayssa, you did the right thing to take Koukou to an Avian vet. As Jane said, African Greys will hide their illness; Koukou probably worked very hard to appear strong. I am sorry that this happened and hopefully in time you will have an abundance of smiles, remembering the good times you had together.

Thanks alot:( i've been crying since yesterday, i feel bad and guilty because maybe just maybe if i made more effort and made him do x rays and stuff like that the reall illness would appear and i would be able to treat him i feel so bad, i hope he is relaxed and happy now and the memories are what is killing me however thanks alot for your sympathy and support.

I am so sorry to hear your baby died. I cried for a week when my first grey died. Mine didn't even show signs of illness until the day he died. At first I thought that I wouldn't get another. I didn't start to feel better until I decided to get another. We got Chyloe three weeks after losing Max. We will always remember Max but Chyloe has brought so much love and laughter into our lives. I hope you can have another grey to love soon.
