Gordon is an 8-year-old Grey. I brought him home last night, and I'm really very nervous about whether or not he's happy or freaked out or anything. Does changing his toys make him nervous? I took down one of his cage toys this morning - which he never plays with and was filthy - and replaced it with a mirror. It seems like he's been on a high perch in the back of a cage now for a couple of hours. Of course, that could be because my teenage son came home. Also, he's been preening a lot, but it seems like he's really yanking the front, long feathers on his wings. Is that bad? He also is not at all used to coming out of his cage, and his former owner only took him out on a T-stick. He stepped right up for me off the T-stick yesterday. Today, I've just left the front door of the cage open most of the day, but he isn't at all interested. He is playing a lot with his bell, and he ate. He's talked a little, too. Help! Nervous Mom!

Welcome to the forum.
You will need to let Gordon set the pace. You are new to him and need to gain his trust. Try sitting near his cage talking to him. Offer him treats. Some greys are afraid of anything new and right now, Gordon's whole environment is new to him. The fact that he is eating and talking is a good sign. Don't worry about preening unless he pulls his feathers out. Just take things slowly.

Thank you for your quick reply. After I posted, he began climbing all over the roof of his cage hanging upside down and ringing his bell, talking and singing, and even made his way to the front door, which was open, stuck his head out and looked around for a few seconds. It was so much fun to watch him explore! What a great first day!

That is great that he stepped up to you already. That is a great sign. If he hasn't been out in a while, it may take him some time for him to explore out of his cage. He must be pretty comfortable in your place already. If he is stepping up to your hand, I would be sure to have him step up every day and offer him treats while he is on your hand. Seems like you guys are off to an excellent start.

Congratulations Liz!!!
It is so cool for me to now have a colleague with a Grey!!
(I work with Liz)
The fact that within one day Gordon is eating, ringing a bell and talking really is a great sign that he is feeling comfortable with his surroundings. I am sure that he is going to love his outside of the cage time... and really appreciate you for letting him out. The members of our board are so very kind and collectively have tremendous experience with everything regarding Greys. I am thankful everyday to be a part of this wonderful group. Gordon has a great Mom to take care of him! Grant

hey there, welcome! As said before, let your new man show you his pace. It sounds to me like he's going to be a hoot for you, and will be the source of plenty of good old fashioned belly laughs too.
