I am currently babysitting four birds for my friend who is overseas for six weeks and my daughter's cat while they are away on holiday. Because hubby is very allergic to cats, I have to leave the cat at his home and go over every day to feed him. He is upset at being left alone and wraps his paws around my ankle trying to prevent me from leaving.
We are currently doing work on our house (new roof, front door, bathroom etc.). The contractors call this "panic season". Winter is coming so everyone wants their work done now. When they did the bathroom, the wall was damaged as they removed the old vanity. That was fixed then it meant painting which snowballed into painting other rooms, halls and stairway. Because it is such a busy time, we have to schedule work when the people can fit us in. We had to move all the birds down to our finished basement for their protection. They are not happy about the move even though we are down there with them. Chyloe has a morning ritual with daddy scratching her neck. This morning instead of lowering her head for a scratch, she bit him. Her cage door is open but she refuses to come out and is not saying too much.
Hopefully, things will get back to normal in a few days. I know I will have a problem with Chy when she returns to her usual spot in the den because the walls will be a different colour. Then the vertical blinds will be different too.

My daughter's cat does the same thing to me when I take care of him...I won't let him come here because of Jezzie...Isn't it the cutest thing though..LoL...These feathered brats are such creatures of habit...Is the new color a big change from the old? I'm curious how she's gonna react to that...I want to paint my livingroom where Jezzie spends most of her time on her playstand but am worried as to her reaction to a drastic new color on the walls.

I had the main wall in the kitchen/living area painted a dark, brick red. It was white. It was a huge change and spanned the length of my apartment, but the birds didn't think twice about it. They seemed just fine.
Now, buy a new palm tree and they won't go near it for weeks. Put a new table cloth on the table and they were terrified of it until it finally disappeared. I really took advantage of the table cloth and tore it into strips and hung it around my place where I wanted to keep the birds away. People often questioned the strips of red hanging around my apartment. That lasted several months, but eventually they wore out or Manzi's kamikaze attacks against them eventually did them in.
They are so silly with what they choose to be afraid of.

We have now moved every birdie back where they belong. Chyloe has been subdued but not afraid of the different wall colour. The new vertical blinds are not ready yet. They may scare her. As I have mentioned in other posts, she is not as scared of things as she was when younger.

They are such creatures of habit aren't they. I remember Mitzi once refused to go in the cage when I replaced a white perch with one that was more creamy yellow but otherwise exactly the same. She was okay when we redecorated though.

Hector seems okay with changes outside the cage but once I bought a very dangerous new perch for the cage and he ate hanging upside down for over 2 weeks until I gave up and took it out.

My Smokes goes BANANA'S on anything NEW..especially in her home..she will growl and screech and cower in the corner..Really SUCKS if its a new food or water bowl!!..those colorfully striped rope type perches? FORGET IT! She would rather hang upside down from her roof and growl at it..Amy,my BF however, could NOT give a hoot..go figure

Manzi did this with a new perch. He ate upside-down as well. I'm more stubborn than him though and I left it in his cage. Eventually, he went to standing on the perch. It took two weeks. Right now he is scared of this new wheat toy I put in his cage. I thought the birds would quickly shred it to pieces, but after three weeks Maui ignores it and Manzi is terrified of it. Maybe one day he'll destroy it, or I may put it on the fridge to keep him from flying up there for a while.

Manzi and Maui will get like that with workers coming into the place bringing in equipment (ladders, tools, etc.), but otherwise they are pretty good about new things. I have always introduced new things since I first acquired them. Manzi used to growl a lot more, but now he is more used to regularly getting new items in his cage and around the house. I change the boxes and junk I put in their cage on a weekly basis (anything I am throwing out which looks parrot chewable first goes into their cage).

Chyloe has already started to work on the new paint job. We had the wooden trim repaired before the painting. One section now has a series of chunks missing. Hubby was supposed to be supervising her at the time!
