Gail, we are so sorry for your loss. We have had several CAGs who have passed away over the years -- some tragically. I cannot possibly know the depth of feeling you have for your loss. When Ruby flew off I was absolutely devastated. Luckily, we recovered her the next day with much relief. But having your CAG pass is just too much for me to fathom. My heartfelt condolences to you and your family. Let us know if we can help you through the difficult grieving stage.
Tom

Gail, I'm so sorry to hear you lost your baby. When my first grey died, I cried for a week and didn't start to feel better until I considered getting another. I was so heartbroken. Now I have my darling Chyloe. Her personality is very different from Max who is now a lovely memory.
The members of this forum are like a family who will help you in anyway we can.

My name is Sue I was born and raised in Manchester, NH. I have 2 beautiful daughers and 2 grandchildren. I am retired from the State of New Hampshire I worked in the NH State Prison as a therapist and eventually an Administrator for a 2,000 bed prison in NH.
Once retired I moved to Florida in 2005 and bought my first of many parrots. Sammie is my TAG. I now show and breed cockatiels however all my parrots are special and enjoy one on one time with me daily. I just bought a 8' x 4' x 7' high flight cage for my Sammie. Oh all my parrots are flighted some just do not know it hahaha.

Hi I'm Neil from the Midlands in the uk, I'm married to Janet and have been for 35 years, I have two grown up kids and three grandkids with another on the way, at the age of 55 within the next two weeks I will be fullfilling a lifelong dream of hopefully making another long term commitment for better or worse to my first african grey, my first meeting was a week ago to choose between a male(?) or female(?) hand reared grey, the male was fine and let me stroke his head quite a lot the female was far more wary, although she let me stroke her head once she then took my finger in her beak and applied some pressure i'm sure she could have hurt me but i think she was politely telling me to back off, 99.9% i'm going to take the female and she will be named poppy, i look forward to all the help and support your forum will supply and will update everyone as soon as i bring my grey home.
Neil

Welcome to the forum Neil.
Greys are wonderful. You are in for the ride of your life. Chyloe keeps us laughing all the time. She is more like a child than a bird. Anyone who comes to the house is more interested in her than us.
Feel free to ask any questions. There are a lot of knowledgeable people on the forum. We are always happy to help each other.

Thank you Haz
I'm sure i'll be asking lots of questions.
There may be a change of plan, the breeder rang me tonight and said that she has a 100% guaranteed female but that she's been frightened not sure what that means but i'm going over tomorrow to take a look.

Hello Neil and Gail. Welcome to the forum.
Gail, I too lost a gray 3-years ago. I don't think you ever get over the loss, you just become able to accept it better. Preston gave me the best advice when he said to get another one. At first I was so devastated that I couldn't fathom getting another one, but we did, sisters Renee' and Reba. They filled that huge void in our hearts that Logan left.
I love this forum, it is like an extended family. We've been through so much since I became a member 4-years ago, I believe.

Hi, My name is Dot. I had a TAG for 22 years. She died a couple of years ago. I really missed her, but kept busy with 4 dachshunds. A week or so ago, I started browsing on the web for CAGs that needed adopting. There werre 2 in Texas, but western union screwed things up badly. So I looked closer to home (in Southern Maryland near the Chesapeake Bay) and found a family in Laurel who had a young CAG for sale because he had to stay in the basement to keep their young kids safe.
I got him! Shakoba is 6 years old. We've had him almost a week. We are still getting used to each other. He's a cool bird, makes a lot of odd noises, whistles and a couple of words. His first was Meow! and his other was to say his name, Koba.
Today was a raw, rainy day. Koba just sat there, not moving, eating or anything. I got really worried! So I covered him up, all but the front of the cage, and he revived enough to eat and drink some. But still hasn't been his earlier, lively self. I dearly hope it's just the weather!
Anyway, that's it so far. I am a retired Forest Ranger (Maryland's first female Ranger), County Arborist and Environmental Planner. It's great not to have to answer to an alarm clock any more! So Koba is perched on a Maple branch, which is safe for birds to chew on (think maple syrup). Never, ever give an animal a cherry tree branch - the bark and leaves from wilted Cherry trees have been knownto poison cattle. If it can kill a cow, why chance it with a precious bird?
Thanks for letting me join this forum.
Dot
PS - before Koba, I'd had Ashley, a TAG for 22 years. She was sweet, but wild-caught. Never did tame down enough to come happilly out of the cage. When I got married, a black long-haired dachshund entered our home. She couldn't deal with something alive on the floor, until I got her a giant 4' x 4' cage. Then Ashley was happy. But I didn't know enough to avoid seed diets for a Grey. Ashley the Woggie Parrot (she told me so) died way too young for my ignorance. :-(
