Hi I'm Grant.
I grew up on Freeport, Grand Bahama Island in the Bahamas and moved to the United States when I was 12. This is definitely where my passion for music was born. For me, reggae songs were both my lullabies and nursery rhymes combined. I am a professional musician that writes, records and teaches at a college. I love animals, especially birds. I could sit and watch river otters for hours, take me to a zoo and I am in heaven. I'm also in school and studying the Renaissance art period.
I have developed the true feeling of compassion and a deep capacity for patience through Shayla, my Congo African Grey. She is like my "Guardian Angel"; I can feel the weight of her stare as she looks unwaveringly across the room to make sure everything is OK. I think she really thinks she is human and I love her personality mixture of both adorable cuteness and confident strong will. I cannot say enough about how happy I am having her in my life and a member of my family.

HI There
I am Lenke. I live in South Africa with my animals & furniture living in Cape Town.
I am in Live Events and do the technical - lighting, sound, screens etc. I sometimes think that even my biggest sound rig wouldn't be able to compete with my CAG Lucky when he's decided to be loud!
Lucky has decided he's my hubby, and won't let anyone else near enough to touch me, when he's in his Hubby mood, this includes my 5 dogs, 3 cats or fish!
I rescued / re-homed Lucky 5 years ago, having been, prior to that, a totally ignorant non-bird person. Since he's joined my life, i've become a feather lover too, with a pair of lovebirds (black & brown) who joined us and gave us great amusement while they were with us. When i moved to Cape Town, these two joined a huge aviary of other parakeets and are apparently breeding up a storm. Lucky, now in Cape Town, has gone from living 40 odd years in a cage all the time, to now barely entering his cage, except at bed time. He rules the animals, and tries his best to rule the humans too.
As a community, we are such a supportive and respectful group, and would love to hear your stories & about you.

Hi,
I'm Haz. I was born in England and moved to Canada as a teenager. Now Ottawa is my home.
When I was 10, my first budgie came to live with me which was the start of a life-long love of birds. If I had my way, my home would be full of animals. Unfortunately, my husband has a problem with allergies. Thankfully, birds don't cause him any problem.
I too love to visit zoos. The one in Toronto is marvelous Grant. Hope you can get to visit it.
Chyloe is my second Congo African Grey. She came as a baby to heal my broken heart after the death of my first grey four years ago. Nobody every told her she was a bird so she thinks she is human.
As Lenke says, we are a supportive group, more like a family than a forum. We would love to hear from you and hear your stories.

My turn I guess I was born in the Netherlands and always loved animals. Had dogs, mice, Guinea pigs, rabbits, budgies... if I'd have to mention them all this page would not be long enough When I still lived with my parents, I wanted a friend for life... so I started to look into African Grey parrots. The first of January, 1999 Dandy came in our lives... five weeks old... the love of my life, to grow old together. The sad story is I got to live with him shorter than most of my other pets... 3 years in fact. Sadly he passed away, though not while he was with me (long story). What happened later in my life? I fell in love, got married and moved to Canada to be with my husband (who happens to be the second love of my life) . Now I live with him (obviously) and our four cats. They are lovely and absolutely adorable, but I still miss my sweet Dandy... I know he would have loved it here in the Rocky Mountains!

Hi, My name is Susan, and so far I am the only one that is born in the US. I grew up in Northeast Pennsylvania on a farm with lots of animals. It was my job at age 4-5 to walk down to the barn every morning and gets the eggs. I took lots of "pecks" from moms who did not want to give up the eggs. That must have been a sign.
I am married , and work as a registered nurse here in Florida. We had two Doberman , one adopted about 10 months old , and one when he was only 8 weeks. They both passed at 12 and 13, I did not know what to do with myself, cried for at least 2 weeks. About a year later I saw on TV an animal show about parrots and thought that they were quite cute and different. I never knew anyone that had birds except for the usual canary or budgies . I started to study about them, well long story short , our first was a Quaker. Needless to say the fit is good for us, we now have four parrots , all are very different and keep us on our toes to keep them all healthy and happy.
I love the people here on the forum , everyone is so helpful and understanding. Thank You all.

Welcome to the forum.
Greys are incredible. My Chyloe thinks she is a person and keeps us laughing all the time.
With a 17 year old, you will need to go slowly as he/she will miss her old family. It may go easier if the bird already knows you as in the original owner being a relative, friend or neighbour.
I would suggest you read various threads in this forum then ask whatever questions come to mind. We are here to help.

I grew up in Los Angeles and lived in California most of my life (with a couple years outside the U.S.). I have always loved animals as we were raised with a cockatiel aviary. We bred and raised lots of cockatiels. I had always wanted a larger parrot and 8 years ago I bought Manzi, my african grey. He was a baby at the time. Two years ago, I got my second Grey, Maui. She is 20 years older than Manzi. They don't really hate each other, but they're not exactly friends. 1.5 years ago I moved to Minnesota for a job. I have dreams of building a huge aviary so the birds can play outside during the day with lots of room to stretch their wings and fly. I'm not sure Minnesota fits into those dreams as the weather isn't reassuring. I do have a blog where I give regular updates about my Greys: Manziworld.blogspot.com

I live in a suburb of Los Angeles and was fortunate enough to retire "early".
I do electronic consulting and mostly work on my cars or my place or make silly videos of Beaker.
Beaker is the replacement for my Amazon which passed after 22 years.
The smartest thing I did was I dealt with a breeder who is very well respected.

Hi everyone My name is Kate. I was born in Poland but I have migrated to the UK and I am happy owner of nearly 9 months old grey. Me and my partner bought our Rango when he was only 8 weeks old. Everything went well, but two months ago my partner had 7 weeks long business trip and when he came back Rango is scared of him. He cannot touch him, or even put him back to the cage or even let him out of the cage. It is so sad to watch because before the trip they were best buddies. Now I consider, clip Rango's wings or not? Maybe if I clipped his wings it would be easier to train him back?

Hi, My name is Stephanie, I live in Atlanta, GA...hubby and I went to a local pet store to get worms for my bearded dragon and I fell inlove with an african grey they had...Next thing I knew I was getting an email from a Breeder with pictures and personality description of 3 babies asking me which one I wanted...hubby put a deposit and I needed to pick which one I wanted. I picked Jezebel because of her silly personality, birth date, and her band number she had not been dna'd yet so I had no clue what she was. I watched her grow through live feeds, emails and pictures from the breeder (she was in VA) At 3 months I picked her up at the atlanta airport and our journey began....She is definetly my baby...loving yet head strong .. I would be lost without my little shadow.

Hello, My name is Loyce and I currently live outside Tampa, Florida. I was born in Encino, California, and lived there until I was 14, when I moved to Houston, Texas. I eventually married and then my husband joined the Navy. We were stationed all over to include Hawaii. So far I have lived in 11 States. We have four children and 7 grand-children. Both my husband and I work for the Department of Veteran Affairs in Tampa, Florida.
I grew up with several pets, but never owned a bird until 5-years ago when we got Logan. Our time was short together as she passed right before her 2nd Birthday from Teflon poisoning. We now have two CAGs who are sisters, a Rose Breasted Cockatoo, a dog and two rats.
We are looking forward to retirement in the next couple years and plan to return to Arkansas where we own several acres.
I joined this forum when Logan began to show illness and know that I could not have gotten through that unbelievable heartache without the wonderful people on this forum.

Welcome jainny and syndrella. The forum has suffered some personal losses recently. Usually, new members are welcomed very quickly. Anyway, you will find this forum a great place to obtain information and to exchange views in a friendly community. Why don't you tell us about your fids, your African Greys? How old are they and what are their personalities like? We all look forward to getting to know you. Again, welcome to the forum.
Tom
