My AG knows it's bed time at around 11-12 in the evening, and makes the sound of the light switch being clicked off, accompanied by many "goodnights" until I give up, say goodnight, and go to bed.
He doesn't get covered at night, and he's quiet until I start moving around, as soon as he hears me moving, he starts contact calling.

Yes, mine go to bed somewhere around 11.30 but Mitzi will sometimes decide it is bedtime and start saying "night night" earlier than that. Then I say "It's night night time" and start to cover the cage. They climb up to their sleeping perches and don't stir until I get them up in the morning.

madness and stinky go to bed about 9.30 ish, i say goodnight a couple of times and madness climbs in first closely followed by stinky. This was the first thing they learnt to do which i found usefull as neither of them were tame , madness is now but stinky is still a wild child. So what ever problems we may have we never have any when it comes to going to bed.

Jane, Mitzi and Monty sound so well behaved! Joshua lives in the sitting room and if people come to stay with me, they sleep on the couch there. I feel so sorry for them, as Joshua talks at them until they put the light out, and wakes them up as soon as it gets light outside. He's never been covered at night, and doesn't like anything draped over the cage, it freaks him out, so I can't do anything about it. He's been noisy all day today, probably because I have had a headache since I woke up and I am clearly going to take it back to bed with me. Torment? Lidia

Hahahahaaaa...I live in an open loft apartment! The moment I open my eyes BoBo starts his babbling...even if I want to continue my dreams...it's been a 6am start for me now for almost 4 months. Covering his cage does did nothing...he just turned up the volume trying to find me. ;D
He is always ready for bed at 10pm - sharp. If Im up (ANYWHERE in my loft!) he sits on the edge of his water bowl and Grrrrrriiiinds his beak from 10pm until I turn out the lights. They say it's a sign of contentment when it's before bedtime...I think he does it because he knows it drives me crazy...and then to bed!

How about this? Does your AG know the names of some of your family and friends, but will only say them when those people are not yet in the room, not there at all, or have just left? Joshua knows my brothers by name and my pal who lives next door, and a couple of other pals. But although he says their names to me, he never says their names in front of them! If he hears one of them coming up the stairs, he says their name to me! I tell them Joshua has just recognised them by name, and they don't believe me because - of course - they have never heard him use their name. So unfair!!!! We all know that AG's make most of their noise and talk most when other people are making noise or talking around them, but why do they never do their party tricks when you most want them to? Then as soon as the pressure is off, there they are, pointing their little parrot feet at your departed friends, shooting and making bang bang sounds ... Lidia

Yes, Mitzi knows my son's name and she will say it when he is here but much more often when he isn't. She should know my name but she never uses it; instead she makes this strange throat clearing type of noise to attract my attention. She obviously thinks it is a suitable noise to use to summon a slave! I have told her that I don't like it but it doesn't do any good.

I have conditioned Trinie to ring a bell for attention. In the mornings when he hears my voice or my occasional wake-up sneeze, he starts ringing this bell on the side of his cage. When we are in the same room, he makes a uck..uch..uck noise, but if i am in another room Lord Trinie will ring his bell and if master is sitting on my hand, he will nudge me with his beak but if I don't pay him attention then he gently pulls my skin, similar to a kid tugging on your hand.
He is beginning to talk but only when we are alone and acts dump if I wanted to show him off to other people. I think it's because I haven't socialized him enough with strangers so I am thinking about taking him out into the park more often.

Lidia and Jane, You both crack me right up! I know our birds are surprisingly clever, and yet they never cease to amaze me. So, Lidia, you must have taught Joshua how to play dead (or shoot others??LOL) How funny! How did you manage that? Jane, your comment about summoning a slave was priceless. I know exactly what you mean. Pearl likes to get my attention by whistling, but I always know the difference between when she's complemeting me (the true wolf whistle) and when she needs me to do her bidding (a throaty, screetchy mock wolf whistle that has the same pitch but is not whistled). She then yells "hellooooo." Such attitude. I wouldn't trade her for anything.

Hi Ranae,
Thanks. As you surmise, Joshua shoots people.
I didn't exactly teach him to shoot, I just often shoot him by pointing a finger at him and making a shooting noise and over time he began to copy me. What cracks me up is that he copies the gesture as well as the noise. He picks his foot up, points it at someone and then shoots!
When he knows someone well enough and is comfortable in their presence, he will shoot them and talk with them, but still will not say their name.
Shooting isn't the only gesture he copies, he also waves goodbye with his wings and uses his head to indicate the hand gesture for 'come here'.
And I wouldn't trade him for all the tea in China!
Lidia ;D
