Hi, I have just been speaking to the breeder that we bought our lovely cag "Merlin" from about diet. I said that we have tried Merlin with Mango and that he doesnt seem to like it very much and he said that he is not supposed to have this anyway. basically he said that when it comes to fruit, as a rule of thumb, never let him eat ANYTHING that has a stone inside. He said that the stone is the poisonous bit and also the fruit that is directly touching or is around the stone - therefor dont give him anything that has stones inside - even if you remove the stone!
Do you guys agree with this? Have I been poisoning Merlin a bit?
thanks

There are problems with the stones and pips of some fruit. Apple, peach, plum, cherry, apricot for example are in the Roseaceae family. These stones and pips contain cyanogenic glycosides which release cyanide if ingested. The flesh is okay to eat.
Mango belongs to the Anacardiaceae family, along with pistachio nuts and cashews and poison ivy. Mango skin can be irritating to humans due to certain chemicals in it. Mango flesh is not on the list of foods to be avoided by parrots but mine don't like it either.
Avocado pears are toxic to parrots but it is thought that the most toxic parts are the areas near the stone.
