It's a command commonly used to get the bird to climb on your finger. Hold your finger under his tummy and say "step up" bump him lightly and he should climb up, unless he is like mine. Pete cares not to "step up".

I use the whole of my hand, palm side down. It is a good idea to teach the step up command because it keeps you in control and if successful it becomes an automatic response by the bird.

"The African Grey Parrots" book by Barron's also explains how to do the step-up practice very well on pages 50 & 51 they show pictures with hand positions. Let us know if you need us to elaborate more for you! :)a
