Mimi He is calling for you and when you arrive he stops. In the wild, African Greys call to each other a lot so he is just doing what is natural. They need to keep in contact with other flock members so this particular sound is probably a flock call. I don't know if you will be able to make him do it in front of you, even talking seems to be something entirely decided by the bird as to when and what they will say. Some talk more when they are alone in the room. Mitzi talks in her cage but rarely when she is out. Jane

I agree with other reply. Birds check up on each other in the wild by calling. Once he sees you there's no need to call. However you might get him to talk if you make a game out of it. My four-year-old grey loves to play "peek-a-boo" with me. I've taught him to shout, "Where are you?" when I'm out of sight and when I reappear he says, "Oh! There you are!" How old is your bird? As they get a greater vocabulary different things may encourage his talking whether you're in the room or not. Often they will respond to the phone, doorbell, baby crying, etc. This will come as they mature and shouldn't take much extra effort from you. Just talk directly to your bird as you do things around the house. He'll be talking your ear off in no time! (By the way, Greys seem to be predominantly shy in public. Ours rarely makes any sound when we have him out with us at the store or park. But I have heard of cases where a parrot has been conditioned to vocalize in public). Hope this helps!

Koko is 2 year old. We buy him before 2 months and he is not accustomed with us yet, but we have a small progress with him. We play this game "peek-a-boo", but he not understood, he still shy about us.
