I have 2 sun conures, do not know sex of either, they came from different homes, I've only had them 3 weeks tops and I recently noticed them preening one another, and I saw the one try and mount the other,,, My question is, does this mean they are opposite sexes? Or is this just something they naturally do whether it be 2 males/females? I dont want any babies , I need to know if they should be seperated.

This does sound like mating behaviour. Birds of the same sex can be friends and preen each other but the mounting would indicate they are of opposite sex.

wow what a fast reply thank you, Will it do more damage than good to seperate them? will they start plucking their feathers or anything?

I don't think they would start feather plucking through being separated but they might miss each other. If you want to separate them, try it out and see how they react.

I only have experience with C.ocatiels in the breeding department. We have found that if there wasn’t a place for them to make a nest, the reproduction stopped. They still mate, but nothing comes from it. This allows them to be together as they truly want to be, and we are worry free from looking for good homes.

Jane said, "but the mounting would indicate otherwise". Not necessarily- I've heard of exceptions. As long as their isn't a nest box or other suitable place you should have no problem with them reproducing. Why are you thinking of separating them? They obviously are very attatched to each other, so I'm sure they'd appreciate being able to stay together. If you'd like to find out the sex of each, you can get a simple DNA test done by a vet.
