Hi, I am from New Zealand and currently only own a wee Indian Ringneck. She is my first bird and I love her sooooooooo much I just have to expand the family. I have been looking into Greys as they are by far the most beautiful bird I have ever laid eyes on.... and a damn site cheaper than a Macaw (not that $ is going to stop me eventually) They sell here for NZ$5 000 and starting rate for a Macaw is $10 000. I am doing as much research as possible before I really start looking because I know it is going to be a HUGE change from owning a ringneck. I want to know everything there is to know about Greys.... please share your experiences with me so I can make an educated decision. Also how do you tell a Congo from a Timmneh? Please excuse my ignorance Thank you, any advice or shared experiences welcome! -Chamon

Greys are intelligent birds and have quite complex dietary needs, they can be nervous and they can be very strong willed. They SOMETIMES decide to favour one person and will bond strongly with that person but others are equally happy with everyone. They are great fun and they are renowned for their talking and imitating abilities.
Timneh greys are smaller than Congos and they have darker, more maroon tails. Timnehs have a pale brown area on the beak whereas the Congo has an all black beak. They are thought to be less nervous, more laid back than Congos but the intelligence and talking potential is the same.

Thanks Jane
Is there any difference in behaviour between male and female birds?

Not as a rule. You probably will not know the sex of your Grey unless you have a DNA test done. The Macaw is a much larger bird; noted to be loud, and very messy. Your choice of the Grey should include many hours of individual time spent with the bird. At least, it will need to be in a high traffic area in your house. You will never again listen to your stereo or TV without the Grey's input. The reward: many hours of antics perfomed for your attention, and to simplify it: the love of a wild animal, once you meet on common ground; that is where the fun begins.

I adopted 2 greys, and my daughter adopted 2 blue and gold macaws from the same man. While all 4 birds have their cute points, and their own personalities, I have to say the greys are the BEST! So much more personality in my opinion. Not only that, but the macaws now live here with me, because they were too loud for daughters condo. Many complaints. And I can see why. When my greys want attention, they act cute.. making sounds of doorbell or telephone to see me running in. When the macaws want attention, they SCREAM. I was never a bird lover. Actually, I wasn't even a bird LIKER. But I am amazed at how these 2 have turned me into something that can only be described as a mother bird. Always getting them treats at the store, always bragging about them, and loving them . And I think that even though they are just.. grey.. they are more beautiful than the colorful macaws. Jeeze, I sound just like a mother LOL
