Our new parrot tweety is a bit scary, he is an alexandrian parakeet, quite big for me since i'm used to lovebirds. Lately I've built trust with him and he is stepping up but oh boy its painful! His nails are short, but when he steps up, he digs in to keep balance, his heavy weight adds to the pain! I've got scratches all over my arms, he hasn't done it purposely though. I'm just wondering if you have this problem with african greys?
I wrapped a tea towel over my arm and he stepped up but he didn't know it was my arm and bit the tea towel which went trough to my arm and it was bleeding! Big birds are scary!

Yes, their nails can be sharp. I used to get scratches as well but I don't anymore because they have the nail trimming perches.
Weight can vary. We did a survey of weight on the forum and the range for CAGs was 350g to 600g. There were 17 CAGs and 8 TAGs. The majority of the CAGs (12) were between 400g and 496g. There was one CAG below 400g and 4 CAGs over 500g. For the TAGs 4 were in the range 225g to to 290g and 4 were 300g to 335g.
Monty has always been a bit lighter than Mitzi, he is usually in the upper 400s while Mitzi is in the lower 500s.

I have nail trimming perches, but I still have to file down Manzi's nails. Even with filing, they still give me scratches, especially when we go outside for walks and Manzi is nervous. When my hand/wrist starts getting scabs from the scratches, I know it is time to file his nails. Even filed though they can still grab pretty hard. I think it will seem pretty bad compared with your love bird, but you'll get used to it. Now, when I hold cockatiels, they seem so delicate and light with such gentle feet.
A month ago, Manzi was sitting on my lap playing with the seam in my jeans. Then, as if he found something, he chomped down very hard biting through my jeans onto my skin underneath. Now, nibbling/grabbing/playing with clothes is strictly forbidden. I didn't bleed, but I did have a bruise that lasted a week.

Maybe try holding him differently. On your hand with your thumb over his toes to provide more support, then he wouldn't feel that he had to hold on so tightly and the skin on your hands tends to be a little tougher than your arm.

It was like a bread knife for awhile.
