I got a 12 wk old weaned grey a couple weeks ago & the vet said hes healthy but recommemded I hand feed only at night for the next couple weeks.. He eats from a spoon & is to the point after a 2 mouthfuls hes had enough but... I think he is losing weight & I'm very concerned. He is soooooooo picky. As for fruit he really only likes grapes & he wont eat pasta. I have made bird bread & he gets that every day & a protien mix. He picks at that. I give him veges & again he picks at them. I also bought a seed mix & mixed that with pretty bird breed specific for greys. That he does eat. He gets nuts too. I saw eggs are good so I will try them but I am concerned that he is losing weight. I believe that he is happy & not really scared of new things or situations. He will eat a little chicken & beef. I am even trying to get him to eat some whole wheat bread. Most of the fresh things I give him he just throws or ignores all together. I'm open to ideas here. Please help as I need to fatten my guy up . Thank you

Hello and welcome to the forum. What does he weigh now? You need to weigh him at the same time every day to make sure he isn't losing too much weight. Many people feed the formula until the baby itself starts to reject it rather than working to a timescale. It is usual to lose a little weight during weaning and fledging. You can offer him human baby food such as vegetable puree, also mashed butternut squash or sweet potato. They can be very fussy about trying new foods so offer it to him while you are eating. Warm food is often accepted more readily. Vegetables are better than fruit as fruit tends to be high in sugar and water and bulky so will fill them up without providing much in the way of nutrients.

When I brought my newest CAG baby home he also lost weight for the first 3 weeks. I don't own a scale that weighs in grams, so I brought him back every Saturday to the women I bought him from, to be weighed. Finally on the 4th Saturday his weight went up. One thing she suggested that seemed to work really well was fresh corn on the cob. Another thing that also worked were pellets made for weaning babies (sorry I don't know who makes them, she just gave me a baggie with a bunch in it). Keep trying different foods many Grey's can be picky eaters. If you don't known, find out what foods he was weaned on to i.e. pellets, or whatever, and make sure he's getting what he's used to. The important thing is to keep getting him weighed until his weight starts to go up. Good Luck.

Welcome, some good answers so far. Remember that with the boost in protein your switching to will cause a weight loss as the muscle builds. You may try a tad of vitamin supplement unless you go with Jane's suggestion of baby food, because there is a such thing as protein poisoning. He will soon be eating veggies from your plate at the rate of: you get very little, so add for a bird to your guest list while making dinner; I'm serious!
PS. I had a label of a supplement I used to use posted on the forum somewhere. I researched several products, and it was the bes according to the ingredients I could find. I stopped because all of my birds were adult, and ate fruits, veggies, and proteins along with the best pellet I could find. And is still juvenile, but eats everything so I never needed it for her.

Try scrambled eggs. I ground up the shell and put that in the eggs also along with what I call "fruit loops" little fruit shaped bird food with vitamins and what not. My bird loves her eggs.
good luck
And Grey's are very picky eaters it can be quite frustrating.

I agree with what everyone has said!!!!! There is one thing that I know will put weight on your baby...peanut butter! We used to buy the all natural, no salt stuff for the birds. I can't remember the brand, but it's one that in the store you can see that there are 2 layers with the oil on top. You mix that up when you get home and mix it everytime you use it. Also it is a kind that once opened you have to refrigerate it. The name still escapes me.
Anyway, that was one of the suggestions that the vet gave us years ago. The way we feed it is to cut a grape in half and put a just a tad of PB in the middle and make a grape and PB sandwich...birdie style. All of my birds go nuts for it! Just be sure to not over do it. I don't give it to them anymore, as they all are at a pretty good weight...except for Justice, he's a little tubby.

Sammy weighed in at 433g this A.M. after a big poop. We have recently changed his diet from a nut, seed, dried fruit mixture to Harrison's High Potency pellet as suggested quite strongly from our avian vet. Surprisingly, he seems quite happy with the new diet. The vet told us that nut, seed, dried fruit mixtures are not reliable as you really don't know what they are picking a choosing on a regular basis, and that can result in poor nutrition. So, we're happy that he is following Dr's orders. ;D

Reba has always had a hard time keeping the weight on, but she is around 370 now, Renee' is almost 400 g now.
We mixed baby bird formula with baby food and syringe fed her until she started gaining weight. One thing you must remember with the formula or baby food. They like it around 102 degrees, they don't like it cold or room temp. So having a good candy thermometer is essential.
The girls weren't completely weaned until around 16 weeks, but again we gave Reba the formula/baby food.
Katie was around 16 weeks when we weaned her also.
Because we started the girls and Katie out with small pieces of veggies and fruit, we have no problem with them trying new things. I just put what we are eating in their bowls and they eat what they want.
All three still love baby food and get it as a treat before bed.
They all three get pellets, a variety mixed together every morning and evening. Of course Katie only gets a little bit as she is a Cockatoo and they are prone to being overweight.
Another good way to get them to eat pellets, is to soak them in warm baby food mixed with a little water. That softens them up and makes it easier for the younger ones to eat.
Hope this helps some.
