Hi, please forgive me if I’m going about this all the wrong way but I’m new to this sort of thing. I’ve got a 19 year old African Grey “Baldrick” who up until recently was really well....but, he stopped talking 9 weeks ago, and despite a clean bill of health from the vet he’s not himself 🙁 in fact, having read some of Janes posts I’d say he’s displaying some poorly signs, particularly drooping of tail feathers & heavy breathing (very recent) plus we have noticed some balance issues too. I have sought advice from RSPCA who suggest green tea, to help aid natural anti-bodies, but was alarmed to learn that the life expectancy is much lower than we thought.....any ideas what could be wrong? He is currently asking for (bowing head) & enjoying lots of tickles. Have just noticed breathing very noisy today....😢

If you have an avian vet close by, get your bird there fast. Once they have symptoms of an illness, you need to act quickly. It sounds like a respiratory infection, but I am not an expert. My previous grey, Manfred(rip)had a respiratory/heart inflammation issue that was not cure-able. He had breathing difficulty, coughing up fluid at night and lost weight slowly. He passed away, eventually.
Balance issues sounds like an ear infection, but you need to get him to a vet.

Many thanks Thomas, I think you’re right re respiratory. I am going to contact the vet who saw him a couple of weeks ago to see if he’s confident about seeing him again or if he can advise on where I can take him as there doesn’t seem to be one in my area.....he’s eating & drinking and right now looking pretty perky, but still not right in between times...😢

Birds hide illness for as long as possible so by the time we notice symptoms, they can be very sick. Please get him to the vet quickly.

Many thanks, I am phoning vet first thing. The green tea seems to be helping & he’s had some orange juice too (also recommended) he has definitely picked up. Was so very worried yesterday.....he’s having lots of snuggles/tickles time and has managed to blow me a few kisses too, although I suspect he needs to rest his vocal chords.

Thanks Haz, lots of great parrot names out there but I can’t take the credit I wanted to call him Percy! Lol....his shop name was Echo and the first words he said to me were “f### off Echo”! What a charmer...🤣. We have just got back from the vets and have an Update on Baldi baby....he is poorly, has fluid on lungs/chest infection & possible cardiac problems!! Not good & not easy trying to feed a bird antibiotics....but we are ever hopeful that the drugs work & he makes a full recovery. Should respond in a few days all being well...💙 I will keep you all posted. Thanks for the advice..

Years ago, Chyloe crashed and split open the skin over her keel bone. After trying to heal her with bandages, the vet decided it would take a year unless we operated and stitched her up. After the operation, we had to give her antibiotics and pain killers twice a day for two weeks.
We found it to be a two-person job. I held Chy while my husband used the dispenser to squirt medication in her beak. I massaged her crop to make it go down. We first tried putting the medication in yogurt which she loves. She knew something wasn't right and wouldn't touch it. Even after we stopped putting it in yogurt, she wouldn't eat it unless I ate a spoonful first.
It is hard to outsmart these intelligent birds.

I have to give my CAG, Rudy, medicine twice a day. Forcing it just didn't work for us. I take a teaspoon with a little milk and squirt the medicine in it. She drinks it very quickly that way. Since doing it for so long she will even drink the medicine out of the spoon with just water in it.
I hope your bird gets well quickly. It is so sad to see them I'll. Please keep us updated on the progress.

That's great that he's taking his medicine. I have a 33 yr old Grey. Last year she was pretty sick and the vet said she probably wouldn't last too much longer. I gave her pain meds for a while, but stopped those. Eventually, she just started getting better and now she's even able to fly around again. The vet said she was very old and they don't live as long as I originally thought, but seeing that she's doing so much better now, I'm not sure what was wrong, nor do I think she was doing so badly cause of her age.
Can you weigh Baldi? That is a very good indicator of health for my two. Then you can monitor if he's gaining/losing weight.

Hi Adele, I’m so glad your parrot got better & getting to 33 without any illnesses is great. I was the same when I learnt of the age expectancy, so much lower than I was lead to believe. This is the first time Baldi has been poorly but he’s only 19. The vet weighed him last week & will be weighing him again tomoz. Still not well 🤒 but has bursts of activity, does lots of sleeping in between. Actually took some of his meds with water this morning. He tries to talk, but struggles. Really hope he gets back to his old self again soon..

Good news. Baldi appears to be responding well to his meds. Still poorly but vet thinking it’s not his heart now! 2 more weeks of meds then back to see the vet. 🤒
